Typically when the industry talks about TV metadata, they talk about snippets of information and images provided by companies such as Rovi and Gracenote that can be used for the descriptive editorial information, images and multimedia on one show as a whole.

But what about at the scene level? And why is temporal metadata — or Tagging TV — the new oil?

You can find it out having a look at the original entry at http://www.appmarket.tv/opinion/1531-the-channel-tagging-tv-and-temporal-metadata.html

Badgeville’s Social Fabric technology allows a website to quickly add a host of real-time social features that charts user behavior, updates users on their on-site activities and allows people to follow any piece of content or fellow users.

Kris Duggan, CEO of Badgeville, said that with Social Fabric, social sharing goes up 100 percent, and user generated content increases by 50 percent. Page views also go up 20-30 percent. Websites can start to enjoy some of the engagement that has made Facebook so sticky.

The more articles you read on Google News, the more your badges level up: you can reach Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum, and finally Ultimate. Keep your badges to yourself, or show them off to your friends,” informs Google.

While this feature could encourage users to visit Google News more often, the main purpose is to find people that know a lot of things about certain topics. “Your badges are private by default, but if you want, you can share your badges with your friends. Tell them about your news interests, display your expertise, start a conversation or just plain brag about how well-read you are,” suggests Google.

Instead of manually adding your favorite topics to your profile, you could add Google News badges. It’s one way to show your expertise and it could be useful if Google plans to integrate Aardvark with Google+ and launch a social Q&A service.

You can read the whole blog entry at http://googlesystem.blogspot.com/2011/07/google-news-badges.html

This week at Google I/O, Google is making the Google Prediction API generally available. One really interesting feature is the automatic flagging of content.

The Google Prediction API can be used by almost any app to recommend the useful, extract the essential, and automate the repetitive. For example:

Recommend a new movie to a customer.

Identify most important customers.

Automatically tag posts with relevant flags.

For example, Ford Motor Co. Research is working to use the Prediction API to optimize plug-in hybrid vehicle fuel efficiency by optionally providing users with likely destinations to choose from, and soon, optimizing driving controls to conserve fuel. Because the API is a cloud-hosted RESTful service, Ford has been able to access its computationally-intensive machine learning algorithms to find patterns that rank potential destinations based on previous driving paths. Ford will be demonstrating their work at the API’s I/O Session.

For more info see:

The handbook explains the term collective intelligence and why studying collective intelligence is important nowadays.Furthermore, it gives examples of collective intelligence in different environments as for instance: business organizations, computer science/A.I. and biology. The handbook deals with measuring collective intelligence and associated influence factors and more interesting, it lists several factors which either facilitate collective intelligence (e.g. diversity, incentives for contribution) or inhibit it (e.g. self-interest and the free-rider problem, implementation issues).

Mashable.com reports about a new study (source) which shows that “one out of every five Americans over the age of six has played an online social game at least once. Altogether, that’s nearly 60 million Americans, adults and kids alike. ”

Social gaming is hence not only a playground for web geeks, but also for casual gamers. Social gaming, a new and successful entrant to the gaming market, has the potential to produce a new revenue stream which comes directly from the its end users. Virtual goods/currencies which are a typically part of the social games are best examples which were able to turn casual gamer experience into huge business for startup-enterprises.

The study also shows that 10% of respondents had already spent money by playing social games in their past and other 11% have plans to do so in the future. In 2009, users spent $2.2 billion for buying virtual goods and experts estimate that the number will raise up to $6 billion till 2013.

It is also interesting to see that social gamers tend to be of older age and female (53% women), whereas the traditional gaming sector is dominated by male players. Other research reinforces this outcome and indicates that social gamers are more likely female and their age is around 43 years. Moreover, 35% of the social gamers have no previous video-gaming experience.

Facebook turns out to be the most popular platform for social games. 83% of respondents already played games there, with an average of six different social game titles played per player.

In this article recently appeared on FirstMonday, Viola Krebs illustrates the motives behind the willingness of a large community of individuals to volunteer computing power to help solve a medical research problem. What I find mighty interesting for our endeavors is:
a) the literature review section of the paper (it looks like we are doing a good job in tracking the relevant literature even though we apply it to a different domain!)
b) the methodological section in which they present a fine method for discriminating Implicit and Explicit motivation mechanisms.
You can read the whole paper here:

Announcement of a new journal

Semantic Web – Interoperability, Usability, Applicability

Publisher: IOS Press
ISSN: 1570-0844

http://www.semantic-web-journal.net/

Scope

The journal Semantic Web – Interoperability, Usability, Applicability brings together researchers from various fields which share the vision and need for more effective and meaningful ways to share information across agents and services on the future internet and elsewhere. As such, Semantic Web technologies shall support the seamless integration of data, on-the-fly composition and interoperation of Web services, as well as more intuitive search engines. The semantics – or meaning – of information, however, cannot be defined without a context, which makes personalization, trust, and provenance core topics for Semantic Web research. New retrieval paradigms, user interfaces, and visualization techniques have to unleash the power of the Semantic Web and at the same time hide its complexity from the user. Based on this vision, the journal welcome contributions ranging from theoretical and foundational research over methods and tools to descriptions of concrete ontologies and applications in all areas. We especially welcome papers which add a social, spatial, and temporal dimension to Semantic Web research, as well as application-oriented papers making use of formal semantics.
The journal is peer-reviewed and will be published quarterly.
IOS Press is a leading international publisher of scientific books and journals in many fields including computer & communications sciences and especially also the Semantic Web.

Submissions

The journal invites submissions on all topics related to the Semantic Web. Submissions can fall in one of the following categories.

* Full papers – containing original research results. Results previously published at conferences may be submitted as extended versions.

* Survey articles – full-length papers surveying the state of the art on core Semantic Web topics.

* Descriptions of ontologies – short papers describing ontology modeling and creation efforts.

* Application reports – short papers describing deployed applications of Semantic Web technologies.

* Reports on tools and systems – short papers describing mature Semantic Web related tools and systems.

Review process

The journal uses an open and transparent review process. Submitted manuscripts are posted on the journal homepage and are publicly available. In addition to solicited reviews, public reviews can be made by any researcher. Reviews and review responses are posted on the journal homepage. All reviewers will be acknowledged in the final printed version. While we encourage reviewers to participate in the open and transparent review process, it is also be possible to submit anonymous reviews.

The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation has awarded $362,000 to the Open Annotation Collaboration to “build new digital annotation tools and define and demonstrate a framework for sharing annotations of digital content across the World Wide Web”.

As stated on the OAC’s Web site:

Annotating is a pervasive element of scholarly practice for both the humanist and the scientist. It is a method by which scholars organize existing knowledge and facilitate the creation and sharing of new knowledge. It is used by individual scholars when reading as an aid to memory, to add commentary, and to classify. It can facilitate shared editing, scholarly collaboration, and pedagogy. Over time annotations can have scholarly value in their own right. Yet scholars remain dissatisfied with the options available for annotating digital resources. Scholars wanting to annotate have to learn different annotation clients for different content repositories, have no easy way to integrate annotations made on different systems or created by colleagues using other tools, and are often limited to simplistic and constrained models of annotation. The importance of annotating as a scholarly practice coupled with the real-world limitations of existing practices and tools supporting annotation of digital content has had a retarding effect on the growth of digital scholarship and the level of digital resource use by scholars.

The overarching goals of this project (consisting of multiple phases) are:

To facilitate the emergence of a Web and Resource-centric interoperable annotation environment that allows leveraging annotations across the boundaries of annotation clients, annotation servers, and content collections. To this end, interoperability specifications will be devised.

To demonstrate through implementations an interoperable annotation environment enabled by the interoperability specifications in settings characterized by a variety of annotation client/server environments, content collections, and scholarly use cases.

To seed widespread adoption by deploying robust, production-quality applications conformant with the interoperable annotation environment in ubiquitous and specialized services, tools, and content used by scholars — e.g.: Zotero, AXE, LORE, Co-Annotea, Pliny; JSTOR, AustLit, MONK.
