Typically when the industry talks about TV metadata, they talk about snippets of information and images provided by companies such as Rovi and Gracenote that can be used for the descriptive editorial information, images and multimedia on one show as a whole.

But what about at the scene level? And why is temporal metadata — or Tagging TV — the new oil?

Smith dives into tagging as a method for adding metadata to resources, which in turn increases the organization and findability of the resources.

What’s cool about tags is that you can easily tag the same information with multiple tags. Does the information fall in #techcomm, #contentstrategy, and #findability disciplines? You don’t have to choose one folder to assign the content to. With tags, resources can live in multiple places at once.

Tagging is emerging as one of the most common ways to organize resources on the web. Smith notes that Delicious, a social bookmarking site that first appeared in 2003, was one of the first instances of tagging to emerge online. However, he also notes that classification and metadata strategies have been ongoing for centuries, with the Dewey Decimal system as one of the prime examples.

This week at Google I/O, Google is making the Google Prediction API generally available. One really interesting feature is the automatic flagging of content.

The Google Prediction API can be used by almost any app to recommend the useful, extract the essential, and automate the repetitive. For example:

Recommend a new movie to a customer.

Identify most important customers.

Automatically tag posts with relevant flags.

For example, Ford Motor Co. Research is working to use the Prediction API to optimize plug-in hybrid vehicle fuel efficiency by optionally providing users with likely destinations to choose from, and soon, optimizing driving controls to conserve fuel. Because the API is a cloud-hosted RESTful service, Ford has been able to access its computationally-intensive machine learning algorithms to find patterns that rank potential destinations based on previous driving paths. Ford will be demonstrating their work at the API’s I/O Session.

For more info see:

Management by the Masses” (EKAW 2010) there is a call for papers.

This workshop will not focus on the overall topic of social web applications, e.g. Wikipedia, Facebook and so on, since there are already various initiatives on the topic (e.g. the ICWSM conference as well as various workshops SDOW, etc.) but our main focus will be research conducted on tagging systems, based on the three aforementioned areas. Then, we encourage the submission of research papers that deal with the following topics of interest (but not limited to):

Semantic Tagging and Linked Data

Semantics of tagging systems

Tagging systems versus controlled vocabularies

Extreme tagging methodologies

Tagging systems in enterprise environments

Information retrieval in tagging systems

Tagging and augmented reality

Best practices for tagging

Social aspects of tagging

Prospective views on the future of tagging systems

Evolution of tagging systems

Dynamics of tagging systems

Ontology learning from tagging systems

Datasets and baseline for evaluating semantic tagging systems

Social Network analysis based on tagging systems

Tag and Resource recommendation

Tags in genuine Web 2.0 applications vs tags in streamed data (e.g. Twitter)

User profiles from tagging information

People-tagging

Multilingual tagging systems

User-feedback in tagging systems

Bueda increases the value of rich media and user-generated content via its innovative semantic analysis engine. Leveraging research from Carnegie Mellon University’s Language Technologies Institute, Bueda combines user-generated tags, existing ontologies, and semantic analysis in order to provide publishers with actionable information that can be used for content categorization, targeted advertising, content recommendation and search engine optimization. Via Bueda’s API, any UGC website can have access to the latest technology for tag disambiguation and cleanup with minimal integration hurdles.

Tags are increasingly used to organize user generated content. They give the users the freedom to tag their content with the words that make sense to them making it easier to find their own content. Unfortunately, different words are used for the same things and it is very common to find tags that are missing spaces, have typos, and are redundant or not informative. A publisher with tags of this sort is unable to connect content properly or target advertising effectively. Tags enriched by Bueda can provide not only a better overall user experience but can increase revenue generated from user content.

The Bueda API can transform noisy and redundant tags into back clean, normalized tags, with a breakdown of the semantic concepts represented in the tags. This means that your users still have the freedom of tags, and you still get the benefits of neatly categorized and curated content.

The result is happier users, a better user experience and more revenue.

The Bueda API is currently in private beta.

You can find all the info and even a demo at the Bueda website: http://www.bueda.com

I just found a very interesting article about the application of social tagging in corporate domains. Some quotes found in the article:

“As social tagging grows increasingly popular on the Web, organizations are curious to see how this trendy Web 2.0 approach can benefit the business world. (…) Organizations are thus looking to social tagging as a potential solution for increased findability on intranets, news/blog monitoring and collaboration in workgroups. The enterprise context is different however, and many of the elements that make social tagging work on the Web make it a challenge behind the firewall.

(…) A hybrid solution that employs social tagging and formal taxonomy as complementary information access approaches is emerging as a winning solution.

Organizations are interested in using social tagging technology both within workgroups and across the enterprise. Tagging can supplement information retrieval options in intranets and document management systems, allowing employees to use tags to enhance the findability of internal and external content without waiting for an information professional to categorize it.

(…) These all sound like great benefits, so why doesn’t every company implement social tagging? (…) The first major difference between the Web and the enterprise is nature of the content.

The first major difference between the Web and the enterprise is nature of the content. (…)

People are also different on the Web vs. the enterprise. (…)

Other issues that must be considered pertain to the quality of tags and tagging systems. (…)

Essentially, organizations should not be afraid to get involved in social tagging: it is a simple and inexpensive way to inject a little Web 2.0 into your employees’ lives and supplement more formal approaches to findability. (…)”

If you are interested on the patent, you can find it just here.

Regarding this free-text tagging vs. more semantic tagging techniques, we should not forget the existence of an specification on these same matters called CommonTag. Of course, the IBM’s patent is more focused on the automatic generation/extraction of the semantics behind free-text tagging (tag clouds) than to directly tag resources semantically.
